A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
