Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
